Auditions: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
MONDAY, JUNE 24, 2024, AND TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2024

The Barn Theatre in Montville, NJ, will hold open auditions on June 24 & 25 from 7 to 10 pm for its 97th Season Opener, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written by William Shakespeare and directed by Evie Turner.

Audition Dates: Monday, June 24, 2024, from 7 pm to 10 pm and Tuesday, June 25, 2024, from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Performance Dates: September 13, 20, 21, 27, 28, 2024 at 8 pm, September 14, 15, 22, 29, 2024 at 2 pm.  (Performances are on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. ) Please note there is a possibility of two additional benefit performances on Thursday, September 19 and 26, 2024 at 8 pm.

Show Description: One of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is a comedy set in two worlds—the court of Athens and a mystical forest beyond the city’s walls. The play follows four young lovers and explores themes of the irrationality of love, desire, friendship, possession, jealousy, and magic.

Actors are asked to arrive to sign in within the first hour of the audition start time. All roles are available. The Barn Theatre has an open casting policy for all our productions. As an organization, we are committed to diverse and inclusive casting and welcome all ethnicities and gender identities to audition. Newcomers are especially welcomed and encouraged!  

Cast:
Theseus (35-50)- Duke of Athens, recently returned from conquering the Amazons, a
race of warrior women and is about to marry the conquered Amazon Queen Hippolyta.

Lysander (20-30) – Young nobleman of Athens. In love with Hermia. Hermia’s father is
against her marrying him, he persuades Hermia to run away from home and family into the forest.

Demetrius (20-30) – A young nobleman of Athens. In the past he acted as if he loved
Helena, but after Helena fell in love with him, he changed his mind and having the approval of Egeus, he pursues Hermia. (But she’s not interested)

Egeus (55-65)- An Athenian upper-class respected gentleman who wants his daughter
Hermia to marry Demetrius, his choice for her.

Philostrate (18+)- Theseus’s Master of the Revels (party planner) who is responsible
for organizing the entertainment for the Duke’s marriage celebration.

Hippolyta (35-50) – The legendary Queen of the Amazons engaged to marry Theseus.

Hermia (20-30) – Egeus’s daughter. Both Demetrius and Lysander are in love with her.
She is in love with Lysander. Very strong-willed and independent.

Helena (20-30) – A good friend of Hermia’s and is in love with Demetrius. She tends to
be more self-pitying and put herself in dangerous and humiliating situations, running after Demetrius through the forest even though he wants nothing to do with her.

Puck (20-30) – (AKA Robin Goodfellow) A mischievous fairy who delights in playing
pranks on mortals; he is Oberon’s servant. He has a connection not only to the fairy and human worlds of the play but also to the world of the audience.

Oberon (30-50) – The magical King of the Fairies who rules with Titania

Titania (30-50)– The magical Queen of the Fairies who rules with Oberon

Peasebottom, Moth, Cobweb, and Mustardseed (18+) – Fairies with a few lines,
needs to move well (dances)

The Mechanicals – Aspiring Thespians who provide comic relief

Nick Bottom (30- 50) – The overconfident weaver chosen to play Pyramus in the play
that a group of craftsmen have decided to put on for the wedding celebration.

Peter Quince (30-50) (could also be female) – A carpenter and the writer/director of
the play Francis Flute (20-30)- The bellows-mender chose to play Thisbe in the play. Forced to play a young girl in love.

Robin Starveling (20-40) – The tailor chose to play Thisbe’s mother in the play/ends
up playing the part of Moonshine

Snug (30-50) – The joiner (a tradesperson who builds things by joining wood) chosen to
play the lion in the play.

Tom Snout (30-50) – The tinker (someone who does odd jobs) chosen to play
Pyramus’s father in the play. He ends up playing the part of the Wall, dividing the two lovers in the play.
